A pair of Red-browed Finches build a nest. I video recorded these delightful little birds on and off over 6 days in the middle of January.
One of the birds did not seem to have a lot of experience, and dropped a lot of materials while laying the foundations on that first day. When I arrived about noon on the second day I was surprised at the progress that they had made, the nest was nearly complete. Unfortunately this episode ended in tragedy when a wind and heavy rain hit us, and we found the nest on the ground on the ninth day, with broken eggs inside. I was very sad for them.
Red-browed finches nest from Jan-Apr and lay 4-5 eggs. The eggs are incubated by both sexes for approx 14 days. Both parents feed the young. The young fledge at 22-24 days.
Oh no, that’s so sad 🙁
Interesting facts about the red-browed finch.
Most birds rebuild a new nest each year heovewr a few species will re-use nests year after year such as raptors (hawks, eagles, etc.) and swallows if the nest is still intact the following year. Was this answer helpful?
