(Ptilinopus magnificus)
The Wompoo Fruit-Dove is a large and colourful bird of the rainforest, but their quiet behaviour makes them difficult to see in the canopy. Both the male and female have similar plumage.
However, their deep “wompoo” can be heard quite a distance away.
At Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages, you can usually spot them around the fruiting trees. In the earlier part of the year you may see them near the fig tree at the office, and in the later part of the year they like the fruit of the Alexander Palm Tree’s also near the office. They also come down to the bird baths at the Pioneer and the Tuscany cottages for a nice long drink.
